Multiple certificates in different skills. They&#8217;re about how people behave.<\/p>\n<p>And there are many people making themselves polymaths by following simple steps. Not willy-nilly, but consistently.<\/p>\n<p>These are the key behaviours to look for and model yourself:<\/p>\n<h3>Intellectual Curiosity<\/h3>\n<p>Some people say that curiosity has to be naturally present. I disagree.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, it helps when you&#8217;re inclined toward exploring different topics, but when you understand and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/subconscious-mind-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exercise the subconscious mind<\/a>, you can boost your interest in even the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/boring-topics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boring topics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This ability is very important because no skill or interest area is exciting from top to bottom. For example, in language learning, you have to content with all kinds of unexciting words to be able to speak. I do this myself primarily through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-journal-for-self-improvement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journaling<\/a>. I also design reading semesters for myself, modeling how the school year works.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, I spend three-six months taking &#8220;deep dives&#8221; into particular topics. People would tear pages out of legal textbooks to prevent their &#8220;competition&#8221; from beating them at exams.<\/p>\n<p>These days, so many of those books can be found for free online. That, and many books are available digitally \u2013 a format that makes it difficult to damage the information.<\/p>\n<p>But always remember that &#8220;free&#8221; doesn&#8217;t mean you can get away with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/skimming-vs-scanning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skimming and scanning<\/a>. We always had to show up at a particular time and place. If we couldn&#8217;t be there, the best we had was the memory or notes of other students, many of who did not have very effective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/note-taking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">note-taking strategies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But now?<\/p>\n<p>These days you can interact with other people on a variety of topics through forums. You can join live tutorials via Zoom. And if you can&#8217;t be there live, you can watch the replays.<\/p>\n<p>Even better, many people hosting the live sessions will take questions in advance and cover them during the sessions. That, or they will answer your questions after the fact.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Some Multitasking Does Work<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Remember how I said above that a learning lifestyle puts the games aside and focuses on learning?<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s one exception to this rule, something I do for a few hours a week:<\/p>\n<p>I listen to podcasts while playing some simple games I use for light <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/brain-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain exercise<\/a>. This allows me to place the priority on my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/learning-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learning goals<\/a> while still enjoying a bit of downtime.<\/p>\n<p>And let&#8217;s face it: Even though I rarely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/fall-asleep-while-reading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fall asleep while reading<\/a>, it&#8217;s sometimes nice to let my ears do the reading for a change.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>You Can Invent Your Own University<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/david-perell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Perell<\/a> talks about &#8220;learning in public.&#8221; This is an activity I&#8217;ve been doing since starting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/mmm-podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magnetic Memory Method Podcast<\/a> back in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, there&#8217;s a small amount of technical learning and work involved \u2013 but this is precisely the kind of knowledge a true polymath will want to include in their skillset.<\/p>\n<p>From there, you invite on as many guests as you want to learn from and enjoy the flow of information wealth that comes into your life, one interview at a time. But remembering what they say and turning it into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/crystal-and-fluid-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crystalized intelligence<\/a> is another.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the steps I recommend:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>One: Master Your Memory<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The key memory techniques are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/memory-palace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Memory Palace<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/major-method\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Major System<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/pao-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The PAO System<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/pegword-method\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Pegword Method<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/what-is-mind-mapping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mind mapping<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/spaced-repetition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spaced repetition<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can spend a weekend and get the bird&#8217;s eye view on all of these techniques. From there, it&#8217;s just practice to keep your skills with each mnemonic device sharp.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Two: Deliberate Practice<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Do you want to know the biggest reason people fail to ever pass a polymath test or experience the answer to the question, <em>what is a polymath?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s practice, specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/deliberate-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deliberate practice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I&#8217;ve studied philosophy for years. But I couldn&#8217;t just absorb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/philosophy-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">philosophy books<\/a> and remember their details. I also had to practice asking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/philosophical-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">philosophical questions<\/a> in a philosophical way.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, it can&#8217;t be random or just\u00a0<em>seem\u00a0<\/em>philosophical. It has to literally involve the hallmarks of what philosophy is and how the best philosophers practice it \u2013 deliberately.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever skills and topic areas you include your in your polymath journey, you&#8217;ll want to make sure that you&#8217;re practicing things optimally, not just casually.<\/p>\n<p>As they say in Japanese: Genchi Genbutsu. Go to the real place and do the real thing.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Three: Balance Depth &amp; Breadth<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A true polymath is not a jack-of-all-trades. You can&#8217;t be a surface-level &#8220;expert.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In order to become and then remain a credible authority, I suggest you set goals that involve some kind of testing measure.<\/p>\n<p>For example, my first MA is in English Literature. Completing the degree is a testing measure, as is my second MA in Media &amp; Communications.<\/p>\n<p>So when I share my views on the Internet, you can rest assured that they&#8217;re not just coming from my experiences as someone with a popular blog. I don&#8217;t just speculate on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/memory-palace-language-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how the Memory Palace works for studying languages<\/a>. I complete specific goals, such as when I earned a certificate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-learn-chinese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mandarin Chinese<\/a>. Although in that case I didn&#8217;t carry on to a higher level, I still take steps to maintain the level I achieved, which is what balancing depth and breadth is all about.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll need to work out ways to do that too as you develop as a polymath.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Four: Engage With Experts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We use the term &#8220;autodidact,&#8221; and there&#8217;s truth to it. You can teach yourself many things as a solo student.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s also a misnomer because when we learn, we use materials created by others. Learning is always interpersonal and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/intrapersonal-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrapersonal<\/a> at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The more you understand this, the more you&#8217;ll seek out conversations and collaborations with other experts in each of your fields.<\/p>\n<p>And by constantly expanding your network, you&#8217;ll be able to tap into and leverage the resources of other people. Build a polymathic community around yourself and you will constantly enjoy the spark of new ideas and opportunities to exercise your knowledge by helping others. You&#8217;ll also be able to observe how people use reasoning in a variety of topic areas and improve your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/reasoning-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reasoning skills<\/a> by asking them question and modeling them.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Five: Nurture A Spirit Of Experimentation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One sticking point for would be polymaths is that they remain stuck on consumption-mode.<\/p>\n<p>But you need to implement on ideas\u00a0<em>and\u00a0<\/em>embark on journeys into the unknown.<\/p>\n<p>An experiment can start with something as simple as a &#8220;what if&#8221; question. From there, you formulate a theory of how you would answer the question and provide a hypothetical answer. Downfalls provide opportunities for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/analytical-thinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analytical thinking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And this is a very special kind of analytical thinking because it&#8217;s produced\u00a0<em>out of\u00a0<\/em>your personally designed learning experiments.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/fb-sq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Memory Detective&#8221;<\/a> novel as an experiment. As part of launching the book, I designed, tested and released a live-action memory game.<\/p>\n<p>There were many mistakes along the way. But each and every time, I used the unexpected results as an opportunity to analyze and think rationally about what to do next. I learned a lot about games, even more about novels and exercised an area of my &#8220;marketing brain&#8221; I&#8217;d never even knew existed.<\/p>\n<p>But no experiment? No new learning. And no new area of expertise to add to my polymath profile, so to speak.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Six: Follow a Schedule Suited to Developing Polymathic Levels of Learning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are many ways to structure your time.<\/p>\n<p>In this video, I share my personal morning routine for learning information as quickly as possible, but without cutting corners:<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Polymath Morning Routine for Learning Faster\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8PHUUNY5Cb8?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Even though I probably have some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/polymath-personality-traits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polymathic personality traits<\/a>, it&#8217;s important to structure my time.<\/p>\n<p>I believe that would be true for anyone, whether you believe you&#8217;re an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/autodidactic-polymath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autodidact or a polymath<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that the more topics you juggle, the more disciplined you need to be with planning. Adding more topics will challenge your consistency, so consider tackling information in smaller sets of 3-5 topics, rather than trying to rotate through a higher number.<\/p>\n<p>By the same token, there are no magic numbers. I was excited that I&#8217;d finished writing my dissertation and only had the final defense to go.<\/p>\n<p>We were walking down Bay Street in Toronto and he told me all about how bad the job market had become over the years. He said that even if I published a dozen academic books, I&#8217;d still struggle to get a job on the tenure track at a university.<\/p>\n<p>By that time, I&#8217;d already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/learning-how-to-learn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learned how to learn<\/a> so many different topics, I turned to him with a clear and focused confidence in my voice.<\/p>\n<p>I said, &#8220;if it comes down to it, I&#8217;ll build my own university to teach at.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Long story short: That&#8217;s exactly what wound up happening. But it was only possible thanks to thinking and acting like a polymath.<\/p>\n<p>I know you can do it too, so put the strategies we&#8217;ve discussed today into action and do whatever it takes to become the architect of your creams.
