I&#8217;ll show you how I used a random bit of trivia to produce a great outcome earlier today near the end of this post.<\/p>\n<p>As a memory expert, I commit a lot of information to memory, and the exercise itself is useful. None of it is trivial to me in the end.<\/p>\n<p>So if you want to learn how to get better at trivia, this page has all the details that will take you from amateur to pro. But that&#8217;s not the only strategy von Essen and other successful trivia players use.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to truly know how to study for trivia, it&#8217;s a combination of multiple methods. These learning techniques include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keeping up with current events and world news<\/li>\n<li>Watching other trivia shows and game shows at large<\/li>\n<li>Using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/chunking-memory-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chunking techniques<\/a> while reading<\/li>\n<li>Being good with numbers and mental calculation<\/li>\n<li>Memorizing key lists like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-memorize-the-presidents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the names and dates of presidents<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Practicing in situations that are like the trivia setting to stimulate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/state-dependent-memory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state dependent memory<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This final point is key.<\/p>\n<p>See, if von Essen had one edge above all, it&#8217;s that he was well-practiced at competition. He won the World Memory Championship twice, after all.<\/p>\n<p>That means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/stress-memory-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the stress helped his memory<\/a> more than it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/anxiety-induced-memory-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hindered it<\/a>. He was a pro at performing well under pressure, something most of us can only do when we have some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/deliberate-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deliberate practice<\/a> in similar settings under our belts.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>How to Remember Trivia: 6 Memorization Tricks to Help You Become a Trivia Master<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Now that you&#8217;ve got the broad overview and understand how being skilled with trivia can fulfill a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/cognitive-needs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive needs<\/a>, let&#8217;s get into the granular details.<\/p>\n<p>Every step of the way, knowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-remember-things\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to remember things<\/a> is going to be key.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s start with that.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>One: Master Mnemonics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Broadly speaking, a mnemonic is anything that helps you remember something, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/rote-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rote learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with rote is that it takes too long. That&#8217;s why people use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/mnemonic-devices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mnemonic devices<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/planet-mnemonic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planet mnemonics<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/anatomy-mnemonics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mnemonics for anatomy<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/alphabet-mnemonics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alphabet mnemonics<\/a> for simple tasks.<\/p>\n<p>More advanced strategies like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/major-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Major System<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/pao-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PAO System<\/a> are also helpful, especially for memorizing numbers.<\/p>\n<p>All of these approaches have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/mnemonic-images\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mnemonic images<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/memory-palace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Memory Palace technique<\/a> in common. People serious about getting better at trivia will want to get deeply familiar with each of these approaches.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Two: Consume Massive Amounts of Info Like a Pro<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve got your memory skills boosted, you&#8217;ll want to get good at extracting information from a variety of sources.<\/p>\n<p>One of my go-to strategies has always been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-memorize-a-textbook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a special textbook memorization technique<\/a>. It&#8217;s a vast improvement to most speed reading programs because it avoids <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/skimming-vs-scanning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skimming and scanning practices<\/a> that cause you to miss the important details.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, you use this technique with physical index cards. Some people call them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-memorize-flashcards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flash cards<\/a>, but the strategy is the same. Memory expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/memory-craft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lynne Kelly<\/a> calls handwriting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/news\/announcements\/2023\/3-memory-tips-from-the-memory-whisperer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;a powerful encryption tool in the science of memory.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sure, you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-use-anki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anki<\/a> or some other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/spaced-repetition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spaced repetition<\/a> software, but you&#8217;re quite possibly diminishing the amount you can remember when you do.<\/p>\n<p>So whether you&#8217;re memorizing information from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/philosophy-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">philosophical books<\/a> or absorbing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-remember-medical-terms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical terminology<\/a>, the extraction process I just described streamlines everything. It will also give you more time to hold trivia practice rounds.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Three: Chunk While You Read<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You don&#8217;t always have to use the index card method, however.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I was reading a book about Latin and Greek word origins earlier today. I learned that &#8220;sitos&#8221; is Greek for &#8220;sitting and eating, usually at the side of another.&#8221; It&#8217;s part of the word <em>parasitos<\/em>. We get our word for &#8220;parasite&#8221; from this origin.<\/p>\n<p>To remember this, I didn&#8217;t need to do anything other than chunk it together with a quick mental image of Superman sitting beside a guy I know named Perry at a Safeway grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>Superman is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/pegword-method\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pegword<\/a> I use a lot for words that start with &#8216;s.&#8217; And I have many others.<\/p>\n<p>The point is that I&#8217;m able to &#8220;chunk&#8221; the core information quickly together and add it to a Memory Palace. In this case, the Memory Palace starts with &#8216;s&#8217; as well.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Four: Learn Mental Calculation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A lot of facts involve numbers related to historical dates, how much things weigh, how old things are, distances, etc. I suggest you use the number techniques I&#8217;ve already mentioned, or try the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/number-rhyme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">number rhyme technique<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may even have to perform calculations. To get really fast at that, you can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/mental-calculator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental calculation skills<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Master the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/trachtenberg-method\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trachtenberg method<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Develop an understanding of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vedic_Mathematics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vedic Math<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not only will these skills help you solve any math-related puzzles that may come up, they also contain interesting tidbits that might come up on a trivia quiz.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Five: Practice in the Right Conditions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I once competed at a memory competition against Dave Farrow.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, I didn&#8217;t fall flat on my face. But because I had never competed before, I had no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/context-dependent-memory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">context dependent memory<\/a> developed.<\/p>\n<p>As memory expert and multi-time USA Memory Champ Nelson Dellis coached us when he hosted the Magnetic Memory Method Podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/nelson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to win you need to practice competing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few ways you can do that in low stress environments before taking it to the big time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Play trivia games in noisy places where your concentration will be taxed<\/li>\n<li>Practice with friends who understand your goals and support you<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you balance the challenge-frustration curve<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This final suggestion comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/victorious-mind-audiobook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Victorious Mind<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Balancing the challenge-frustration curve means that you should watch out for when things get too easy. It can feel good for your ego that you&#8217;re doing really well, but it risks not growing your skills.<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side of the coin, if you take on too many challenges, you wind up frustrating yourself. So always be willing to scale back so that you don&#8217;t wind up quitting.<\/p>\n<p>As you continue on, you&#8217;ll find that that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/mental-strength\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental strength<\/a> tactic helps you improve with greater consistency and avoid the temptation to pause or quit.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Six: Keep a Progress Journal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;ve talked about the role of handwriting as a kind of encryption tool.<\/p>\n<p>You can take it a step further by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-journal-for-self-improvement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journaling for improvement<\/a> over time. I just summarize what I memorized throughout the day to get in a bit of extra practice.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Become an Invaluable Trivia Player &amp; Person of Incredible Knowledge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One thing I love about memorizing trivia is that it makes playing trivia games with others a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p>Not just because winning is deeply fulfilling. It also provides two special opportunities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A chance to reflect on when and where you encountered the right information in your past<\/li>\n<li>The opportunity to learn many new things<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this way, you never lose when you play trivia.
