For example, Friedrich Nietzsche wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The existence of forgetting has never been proved: we only know that some things do not come to our mind when we want them to.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nietzsche clues us in on something very important with this quote:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order for things to come to mind, they need to have <\/span><b>entered<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the mind in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My point?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s this:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>One: Not Paying Attention in the First Place<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A major reason we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">think <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we\u2019ve forgotten things isn\u2019t a reason at all. If we haven\u2019t paid proper attention to a detail, then it never entered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/long-term-memory\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long term memory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be humbling to admit that we haven\u2019t been attentive. But it\u2019s one of the keys to experiencing improvement, as we\u2019ll discuss in a moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Two: Storage Failure<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say that you did pay attention, however.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible that a memory was formed, but it was nonetheless not stored correctly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can happen because incoming information often has to compete with other stimuli. For example, when you\u2019re meeting new people, you might also be given details about where they live and their occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another term for this is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychologydictionary.org\/cue-overload-principle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cue overload<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a result, the flow of multiple data points somehow corrupts how the main detail you wanted got stored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Wixted outlines a few different <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14744216\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kinds of interference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The research basically suggests that if words are grouped in categories, you might remember more of them better. But when randomness is introduced, forgetting goes up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of the issue relates to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-memory-works\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how memory works<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly spatial memory. And that\u2019s why when someone prompts you or gives you a trigger that relates thematically or categorically, you can sometimes get back the information that you forgot or felt lingering on the tip of your tongue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Four: The Influence of Time<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that it\u2019s possible to forget your mother tongue without suffering a brain injury or symptoms of a disease?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/deskilling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linguistic deskilling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I experienced it myself while living in Germany and speaking hardly any English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, this kind of forgetting follows the \u201cuse it or lose it,\u201d principle. The theory goes that because these memories are still lingering in the unconscious mind, they are trying to \u201creturn\u201d so that you\u2019ll attend to them. This is the so-called \u201creturn of the repressed\u201d that has been so influential on the horror genre in novels and film.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More sophisticated psychoanalytical research has extended the notion of repression to a kind of filtering. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Langs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Robert Langs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, influenced many practitioners with his suggestion that the unconscious prevents certain \u201cthreats\u201d from getting noticed by the conscious mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If true, his theory explains why we are sometimes told by our partners and loved ones critical details. We not only can\u2019t remember the details. We can\u2019t even remember being told. For whatever reason, the unconscious mind has perceived it as a threat and completely filtered it out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Six: Adaptation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another reason people forget is that some information is simply deprecated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, there\u2019s zero reason for me to remember the phone number my family had when I was 7 years old. I can remember our area code, but that\u2019s because the information is still useful. Again, this kind of forgetting happens because specific details are no longer useful. Instead of getting overwhelmed by many possible names of actors or whatever you\u2019re searching for, you actually cause your brain to run through a list in a structured manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an example, let\u2019s say I\u2019m trying to remember an actor\u2019s name like Tom Cruise. If it doesn\u2019t come to mind, I\u2019ll start silently naming actors I can remember by starting at A.
