autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>What Is The PAO System?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PAO memory systems go back a very long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a simple way to break <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/link-and-story-methods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> down into individual units that can interact in memorable ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take these numbers, for example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21 36 90<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re not that difficult to memorize, but someone using a traditional PAO system would divide the numbers into a set of images specifically ordered according to the PAO pattern. The oldest available evidence is 683 C.E., but it is almost certainly older than that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this alphanumeric system, we see what is probably the first detailed basis for transforming numbers into words.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25716\" src=\"https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/numbers-and-words.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=60&ssl=1\" alt=\"numbers and words\" width=\"1280\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/numbers-and-words.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 1280w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/numbers-and-words-300x188.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/numbers-and-words-1024x640.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/numbers-and-words-768x480.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/numbers-and-words-758x474.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 758w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/numbers-and-words.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;w=512&amp;ssl=1 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What kinds of words?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persons<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Objects<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, you see this arrangement built out with great sophistication in the works of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/bruno\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giordano Bruno<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Shadows of the Ideas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not entirely sure, but I think Bruno chose to include Hebrew letters in his memory system because of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gematria\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gematria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this system, each Hebrew letter is classified so that it also represents a number.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And since almost every Hebrew letter represents an animal, you pretty much have either a person or object in each letter along with the number. This approach is likely also the origin of what used to be called a \u201cbestiary,\u201d and on that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/memory-craft\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lynne Kelly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is really the expert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question is\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does all this work?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, changing numbers into associations that do things allows the person using memory techniques to compress much more information into far fewer images.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, not everyone goes for fewer images. Many people assign three associations for each 2-digit pair. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">01 = Peter Sutton suds soap<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, 0 =2 and 1 = T, leading me to choose an anthropologist for the person, creating suds as the action and soap as the object.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25717\" src=\"https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/soap.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=60&ssl=1\" alt=\"soap\" width=\"1280\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/soap.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 1280w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/soap-300x188.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/soap-1024x640.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/soap-768x480.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/soap-758x474.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 758w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/soap.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;w=512&amp;ssl=1 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll show you how to simplify all of this later so you need only one image, but let\u2019s look a bit deeper at some history and technical matters based on the general principles we\u2019ve discussed so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>PAO System vs Major Method vs Dominic System<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two other systems to know about are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/major-method\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major Method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/dominic-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dominic System<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/master-of-memory-dominic-obrien\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dominic O&#8217;Brie<\/a>n came up with his variation to compete in memory competitions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technically speaking there is no such thing as a Dominic System PAO \u2013 at least not to my knowledge. This is because the Dominic System reduces a PAO down to a PA system. It\u2019s been refined down to Persons and Actions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Major, much like the katapayadi, lets you create any number of words from numbers. It helps reduce the arbitrariness of the associations in a way that other systems do not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you\u2019re also free to simply assign people, objects and actions to numbers without any special reason. If you have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/types-of-synesthesia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">synesthesia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you might have some deeply intuitive choices that come to mind based on that aspect of how your mind words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assuming you\u2019re like most of us and you go with the Major, realize that the limited number of words you can choose from is actually a good thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of memory systems work so well because limits are productive, not restrictive. They just don\u2019t always seem that way at first glance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might also be helpful to realize that a PAO list is really just a variation on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/pegword-method\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pegword method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019ve shared the basis for my entire list there if you want to take a look.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or you can look up various number dictionaries for ideas. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/bruno-furst\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruno Furst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> created a really interesting one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But should you really look the words up?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For ideas, sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the results will really start to flow when you personalize each and every assignment you make for a full 00-99 PAO.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22146\" src=\"https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/The-Bruno-Furst-Number-Dictionary.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=60&ssl=1\" alt=\"The Bruno Furst Number Dictionary\" width=\"1280\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/The-Bruno-Furst-Number-Dictionary.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 1280w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/The-Bruno-Furst-Number-Dictionary-300x188.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/The-Bruno-Furst-Number-Dictionary-1024x640.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/The-Bruno-Furst-Number-Dictionary-768x480.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/The-Bruno-Furst-Number-Dictionary-758x474.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 758w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/The-Bruno-Furst-Number-Dictionary.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;w=512&amp;ssl=1 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Examples From My \u201cMagnetic\u201d PAO<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many years I got along just fine with just the Major System.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then I competed with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/dave-farrow\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dave Farrow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and realized how slow I was using the Major to memorize cards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/major-system-secrets-unlocked-florian-delle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florian Delle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made me realize that you can actually \u201ccompress\u201d each assignment in a way that lets make each one a Person that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is both an action and an object<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, my 84 used to be \u201cfire.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But after speaking with him, I upgraded it to a character in a movie who uses a blowtorch. Fire because a person who uses an object to burn things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To repeat: The person is the object that takes an action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This made everything so much faster!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another example:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36 used to be a box of matches for me, based on the Major System.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s still \u201cmatch,\u201d but now it\u2019s Mike Tyson in a boxing match. Tyson is the person, boxing is the action and his gloves are the object.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, when I want to memorize a number like 8436, I just have to imagine the blowtorch character from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missing in Action 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">setting Mike Tyson on fire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This works the same way when memorizing playing cards that have been assigned numbers or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-memorize-chinese-characters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memorizing Chinese tones<\/a> or verse numbers in scripture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the best part?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take a moment to number your stations in a Memory Palace, you instantly have an image to interact with in each and every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/memory-spaces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memory space<\/a> you use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t use that approach particularly often, but it has come in handy many times as an organizational tool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Using The PAO System For Memorizing Historical Dates<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s useful to know when certain things happened. Personally, I like to know when philosophers lived so I can understand the development or overlap of certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/philosophical-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">philosophical questions<\/a> across time.<\/p>\n<p>Spinoza lived from 1632 to 1677. Using my images, that would be Johnny Cash (the man in black) and Mr. Koch, who was my grade seven teacher.<\/p>\n<p>I placed Spinoza in a Memory Palace <em>after<\/em> Giordano Bruno who is thought to have been born in 1548 and who died in 1600. This means that I don&#8217;t need an image to place Spinoza in the 1600s. But if I did, I would use Dashiell Hammett doing dishes for 16.<\/p>\n<p>The key thing here is to involve the philosophical figure in the images somehow. Usually, I place the birth date in the left hand of the figure and the date of death in the right hand. I adopted this idea from Bruno&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/ancient-memory-techniques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ancient memory strategy<\/a> of using the body as a Memory Palace.<\/p>\n<h3><b>A Fun Way To Practice A PAO<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s an exercise from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/masterclass\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnetic Memory Method Masterclass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have all your figures worked out, get some index cards. Starting with 00-99, fill them all out with a 2-digit pair on each card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, shuffle them up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you come across a 42, name out the figure you chose. Or if it&#8217;s 72, call out that figure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019re able to name each of your associations for 00-99 relatively quickly, you can then start shuffling the deck and practicing memorizing the numbers that come out in order.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would suggest starting small, such as with three, two-digit pairs. As you develop your memory for larger and larger sequences of numbers, place the associations in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/memory-palace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory Palace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so you have a point of reference. But the exact way we use the association differs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the Major System that causes us to land at the same choice, but after that, you can refer to any particular Star Trek episode or movie, and even several of them, depending on what you\u2019re memorizing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, a rigid PAO approach strikes me as unlimited. I like it to be flexible and give me more options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Explore The PAO System For Language Learning<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I\u2019ve struggled to come up with associations when learning a language, I always stop. I ask myself what the numbers would be for the word I\u2019m struggling with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, there\u2019s a word in German: faseln. It means to \u201cspout off.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I looked at the F and S, I thought of 80. That is an image of\u2026 you guessed it:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Shatner as James T. But instead of relying on the generic concept, I push it further to a specific lion: The MGM lion. For your 00-99 PAO, it might be the cowardly lion from the Wizard of Oz or one of the characters from The Lion King.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But not just any lion.
