In my case, I was used to committing to large learning projects. I\u2019d completed a BA and an MA in English literature. Despite all the odds as a student with mental illness, I\u2019d also managed to get into a Ph.D. program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s a quick exercise:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get out a piece of paper and list 2-3 times you\u2019ve accomplished a goal before. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It could be completing high school, learning a language, getting a job after submitting multiple applications, or anything that has meaning for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What you\u2019re looking for is proof that you\u2019re capable of completing learning goals. If you can do it once, you can do it again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<a id=\"remedies\"><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Proven Remedies For a Lack of Concentration<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second step is to find resources that will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-improve-focus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">help you develop focus<\/a> and remove your inability to focus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These resources are bound to be different for different people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Meditation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most likely sources for most people is going to be meditation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, you need to understand that there is more than one kind of meditation. Plus, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2017.00551\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your gender might play a role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which kind might be the right kind for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, you should avoid thinking about meditation as a singular thing. I\u2019ve been practicing for years and keep discovering new things. Practice these for the next 90 days and you\u2019ll be amazed by how much your focus has improved.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><i>2. <\/i>Diet\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of your commitment to removing your concentration problems, you\u2019ll want to do a thorough analysis of your diet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no magic bullet when it comes to optimizing your eating habits for focus. However, it\u2019s common knowledge that the foods we eat create our states of mind. Going back to the ancient world, people have known that there are at least three kinds of foods:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods that make us feel lazy or tired<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods that make us feel energetic or agitated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods that make us feel peaceful<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is going to be different. You just want to look for patterns. For example, I find that I cannot concentrate well after eating rice. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does this mean that I don\u2019t eat rice? No. It just means that if I need to read or write after a meal, I eat something else instead, like salmon with carrots and celery. For me, those foods keep my mind clear and focused.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I only know these things because I\u2019ve completed:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food elimination diets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rotation diets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low FODMAP diets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEAP assessments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food tolerance tests<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are well worth exploring, even if there is a lot of conflicting information about the ins-and-outs of these different styles of eating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, the more you experiment and document, the more observations you\u2019ll have that will help you sort out the foods that help you focus and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/foods-bad-for-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">foods that lead to a lack of focus<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Yes, this is a pain sometimes, but it helps with digestion and circulation.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a id=\"science\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>The Science Behind Concentration Problems<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there\u2019s something else:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diffuse thinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/learn\/learning-how-to-learn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning How to Learn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has one of the best explanations on how walking to allow your thoughts to percolate works. Another great resource is a book called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguin.com.au\/books\/rest-9780241217290\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, when you do something as simple as walking and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remove your focus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from what you\u2019re trying to focus on, your brain will automatically start to make connections in the background. These are precisely the activities that will stretch your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-improve-concentration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">concentration skills<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Learn a language.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of people start learning a language and then give up. They don\u2019t have the attention span for it, or they come up with a whole list of excuses about it being \u201chard.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact is that without challenge, we cannot grow. And taking up a long term learning project like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/bilingualism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">picking up a foreign language<\/a> has been scientifically proven to increase your \u201ccognitive reserve.\u201d That basically means that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-improve-memory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">your memory improves<\/a>, as does your ability to find the words you want to use quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Volunteer.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So many people are aimless these days. I found that by being part of a mission with positive consequences for other people around the world, nearly all of whom I would never meet, a lot of my thoughts became very focused.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think you\u2019ll find this is true for you too, and there are a lot of compelling studies showing that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologicalscience.org\/news\/giving-rather-than-receiving-leads-to-lasting-happiness-study.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">giving, not receiving<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the true path to lasting happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, you need to watch out for what is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1053535799000451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">volunteer&#8217;s folly<\/a>. For example, if you&#8217;re an amateur at building shelter, your volunteer hours won&#8217;t be nearly as powerful as donating money to hire expert builders. Not only are you creating unprofessional housing that will need many costly repairs or outright replacement. You&#8217;re also failing to hire a local company that could use the revenue. (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolf_Dobelli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rolf Dobelli<\/a> points this problem out in <em>The Art of Thinking Clearly<\/em> and it is very easy to avoid.)<br \/>\n<a id=\"conclusion\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Conclusion: Concentrate On Creating Memories Worth Having<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One last tip based on research by Tim Dalgleish that I discovered years after feeling the effects of it myself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember when I told you about my depression and bad habits while completing my Ph.D.?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, on top of becoming a student of focus techniques like meditation, I also started using an ancient device called a \u201cMemory Palace.\u201d (Sometimes called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/roman-room\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roman Room Method<\/a> or the Method of Loci.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This ancient device lets you use buildings like your home and workplace to remember information quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/2167702612468111\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMethod-of-Loci as a Mnemonic Device to Facilitate Access to Self-Affirming Personal Memories for Individuals With Depression,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dalgleish\u2019s research has shown that memorizing positive information also boosts your mood &#8211; even if you have depression or other ailments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what to do in order to experience the results of his research:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Create a Memory Palace.
